Farewell from the Editor-in-Chief

It is with deep regret that I must announce I will be vacating my position as editor-in-chief of The University Star effective Dec. 12. It was never my intention to cut my term short, but, as many of us know, sometimes there are unforeseen circumstances in life that cause a change in plans. I must say, though, that I am overwhelmed with pride when I look back on the last seven months spent as editor of the Star.

'Raisin’ Cane’ honors Harlem Renaissance

The Encore Series, in partnership with Common Experience and the Honors College, will present “Raisin’ Cane: A Harlem Renaissance Odyssey” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Evans Auditorium.

The performance will star actress, singer, dancer and director Jasmine Guy. Guy is best known for her role as Whitley Gilbert in the 1987 NBC sitcom “A Different World,” for which she won six consecutive NAACP Image Awards. She currently plays a recurring role in the hit CW show “The Vampire Diaries” starring Nina Dobrev, Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley. Her 25-year career has led to her recognition as not only a talented actress, singer and comedienne, but also as a director, writer and speaker.

Performing Arts Center Open-House

A public open house will be held Sunday to celebrate the opening of the new Performing Arts Center.

According to a Feb. 12 University Star article, the grand opening performance titled “Public Spectacular” will take place in the Patti Strickel-Harrison Theatre in the center, which holds 312 patrons. Students from the College of Fine Arts and Communication will perform in the show.

The first performance will be from 2-2:45 p.m., and the second takes place from 4-4:45 p.m. There will be free, guided tours from 4:45-5:15 p.m.

A limited number of free tickets will be available to students, faculty, staff and the community for the two performances Sunday. No tickets are required for the guided tours.
