Fall fashion makes its way to campus

As the temperature drops and days get shorter, fashion-minded Bobcats across campus will start to pack away their summer attire and turn toward fall styles.

Top fashion magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar are heralding the latest runway styles. Here on campus, many students are taking a more classic approach to their cold weather lineup.

Olive green military-style jackets are a staple for many fall looks. The piece is versatile enough to be paired with girly, boho or minimalist styles.

“I really like the green jackets, they look good with a lot of looks,” said Mallonie Zhivotovskaya, psychology freshman.

Zhivotovskaya said she would pair hers with black jeans, a thin sweater underneath, leather black booties and a cute scarf.

Strutters don new uniform after 17 years

For the first time ever the Texas State Strutters will perform in maroon and gold uniforms this football season.

The team has worn the same iconic uniforms for the past 17 years, but on Aug. 22, a brand-new look was debuted at their annual Meet the Strutters event.

“We wanted Meet the Strutters to be a grand unveiling, so we made sure that none of the girls posted the uniforms on social media or anything before that day,” said Tammy Fife, Strutters director. “It was hard because they were all so excited, but we told them they could only show their moms.”

The uniforms have not always been maroon and gold.

In fact, the Strutters started out wearing red, silver and white, eventually switching to the iconic maroon, silver and white uniforms.

Beat the heat: how to keep your makeup lasting all day

School has started and once again the hill country is alive with the sound of Bobcats panting up and down the Alkek stairs.

For students who wear makeup, the summer season presents a difficult challenge when it comes to guaranteeing that products last all day. No makeup is perfect, but there are several steps to be taken to ensure your look lasts as long as possible.

Abbi Garcia, assistant manager at The Cosmetics Company Store, said the most important tool for a long-lasting look is face primer.

“A face primer is your best bet for making your makeup stay,” Garica said. “It is important to set up a good base and give the makeup something to hold on to.”

Face primers are a good option for people with dry or combination skin types, Garcia said.

Hammon inspires crowd at convocation

The freshmen and transfer students at Saturday’s New Student Convocation ceremony all had one thing in common—it’s their first year at Texas State.

Keynote speaker Becky Hammon is the perfect person to talk about firsts, as she’s no stranger to them herself.

After signing with the San Antonio Spurs in 2014, Hammon became the first full-time female assistant coach in NBA history. She’s the first full-time female coach out of North America’s four major professional sports. She’s also the first female head coach in the NBA’s Summer League, winning the championship and proving she’ll be sticking around for awhile.

During her speech at convocation, Hammon spoke to the 112th freshman class to arrive on campus about the tools she’s used to find success in her career.

University Police investigating body found at Sewell Park

University Police are investigating after the body of a 29-year-old man was found in the San Marcos River around 8:00 a.m. this morning.

The man's friends reported him missing around midnight after swimming at the river. Dive teams searched overnight but were unable to locate him.

A swimmer spotted the man's body tangled in the Texas wild rice in the river at Sewell Park and alerted police. Access to the river in Sewell Park from Aquarena Springs Drive to the pedestrian bridge was closed to the public until 11:00 a.m.

San Marcos all clear after tornado warnings

University students, staff and faculty received an alert from Emergency Management at 5:24 p.m. Monday stating there was a tornado sighted on campus. Recipients of the message were advised through email and text message to seek shelter indoors and wait for the all-clear signal.

According to Texas State, the alert that students, staff and faculty received was due to severe weather conditions and possible sightings in the area. The only reported tornado was near State Highway 80 and Highway 21 near Wal-Mart.

Several news sources providing updates on weather activity in the region retweeted the alert on their social media platforms after Emergency Management tweeted it.

Mulaney proves talent, showmanship at Moontower

Stand-up comedian John Mulaney performed at the Paramount Theatre Saturday night as part of the Moontower Comedy and Oddity Festival held April 22-25.

The festival brought in other big names such as Patton Oswalt, Wanda Sykes and Ron White. The Paramount seats 320 people, but the theater had more empty seats, especially in the balcony section, than during headliner shows on previous nights.

“I sat at the top, and I was surprised to see empty seats for John Mulaney,” said Erica Johnson, audience member. “I was here last night for Patton Oswalt, and the house was so packed even badge holders were getting turned away.”

Gentrification consistent problem for black community

The black community has been subjected to a constant cycle of oppression and gentrification since the 1950s.

Simply put, gentrification is when upper-class people sweep through and take over spaces primarily inhabited by the lower class. This usually happens between white gentrifiers and minority victims.
