Team lends a hand to help Reading Heroes

Texas State athletics made an impact on the San Marcos community when two softball players gave back their time to local fans.

Kortney Koroll, former Texas State softball player, and Kelli Baker, senior second baseman, volunteered at the Reading Heroes summer camp for young children with reading disabilities.

“It’s pretty much a summer program that helps the kids improve their reading skills and develop confidence for the school year,” Koroll said. “Kelli and I read them a story or two and talked a lot about our softball careers and what type of work ethic is required to achieve their goals.”

Bobcat News and Notes

Coach Zenarae Antoine and the Texas State women’s basketball team announced the addition of a new assistant coach Wednesday. Laura Terry joins the Bobcats after one season as assistant coach at Weber State last year.

Terry’s responsibilities involved on-court coaching, recruiting, scouting, player development and community service involvement. With a focus on post players, Terry produced the leading scorer for the Weber State offense, Jalen Carpenter, and another athlete recognized for All-American honors, Zakiyyah Shahid-Martin.

Beyond the game: De'Marcus Porter, freshman sprinter

There are not many freshmen who have led their 4x400 meter relay team in a qualifier for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

De’Marcus Porter, freshman sprinter, ran the fastest split of the heat on the team, clocking in at 45.63.

“It’s pretty crazy,” Porter said. “No one, including myself, thought that I would be running this fast this early. This just sets the bar for the upcoming years. I’ll need to work harder to continue to run faster.”

Porter’s split aided Texas State in recording the second-fastest 4x400 time in school history. The 3:06.08 time pushed the Bobcats past TCU and Texas for 11th place, qualifying the team for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
