Beyond the game: Jake New, senior fencer

Senior Jake New hums a tune ranging from Loreen’s "Crying Out Your Name" to Conchita Wust’s "Rise Like a Phoenix" that's been stuck in his head as he waits for gear and wires to be checked.

Then the referee yells "En garde!"

That's when everything goes into attack mode for Jake. He lunges forward with only one thing in mind—hit him first. He collects himself and tries to determine what his opponent may possibly do.

New’s anxiety begins when he is on the fencing strip. He hums to combat his anxiety.

This is what New experiences at every fencing event. It wasn't always like this. There was a time when he felt he'd never get the opportunity to fence.

Newby sets school record in final tournament of fall season

Justin Newby, junior, set a school record with a three-round total of 16-under-par-200, concluding the tournament with a 4-under-par-68.

Newby, third overall, was two shots behind first-place winners Antoine Rozner and Cody Blick. The team totaled a three-round score of 87, tying the school record set in the Herb Wimberley Intercollegiate. Texas State concluded the tournament with a 281 on the final day.

"I was nervous but I talked to both Coach Howell and Gabe before the last two rounds about how to calm my nerves and they gave me some tips and pointers to help that out," Newby said.

For two consecutive days, Newby recorded an eagle-two on the par-four 15th hole.
