1. On a scale of 1-10, how well did Texas State compete against Florida State?

Quixem Ramirez: 4. Texas State’s first half was promising. At halftime, Texas State led in time of possession and in turnover margin, two facets that Coach Dennis Franchione focuses on. Tyler Jones, junior quarterback, outplayed Everett Golson, Seminoles sophomore quarterback, in the first half and the Bobcats made fewer mistakes.

1. What would be considered a success against Florida State?

Quixem Ramirez: Finishing the 60-minute game intact.

Paul Livengood: I’m not personally a fan of moral victories, but I feel like competing in any sense would be a major plus for the program. It would be pretty impressive if Texas State kept it under a 21-point margin. Florida State is projected to finish first in the ACC. Texas State is projected to finish fifth in the Sun Belt Conference. You do the math.

1. Who is the X-factor for the offense this season?

Quixem Ramirez: Lawrence White, senior tight end. Texas State utilizes the tight end often—nearly a third of completions were to tight ends last season—and White’s 6-foot-7 frame provides Tyler Jones, junior quarterback, with an easy target. He’s ready to fill in for Bradley Miller after trimming his weight to 240 pounds for this season.

On a scale of 1-10, how satisfied should the Bobcats be with their performance against New Mexico State?

QR: Five. They won the game, sure, but they allowed New Mexico State to gain 639 total yards. The defense broke rather than bent, as quarterback Tyler Rogers and running back Larry Rose III combined for 638 yards. Texas State simply gave New Mexico State enough rope to beat themselves.

On a scale of 1-10, how important is the win against Louisiana-Monroe?

QR: 8. Point to Louisiana-Monroe’s inept offense. Point to Texas State’s inability to manufacture anything offensively during the first half. Point to whatever. This, for all intents and purposes, is the kind of win that sets the tone for the rest of the season. Texas State won its first Sun Belt Conference road game, alleviating the burden of future encounters.

Six players to look for

Rob Lowe, junior running back: Lowe missed one game with a knee injury, and he hasn’t been the same
