High school program recognized by FEMA

The Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) program at San Marcos High School received formal recognition Sept. 16 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for consistency with the agency’s National Strategy on Youth Preparedness.

CERT is a federal educational program under FEMA. The aim of this program is to teach children and adults how to respond to emergency situations. The San Marcos High School CERT program is the second non-government entity of its kind to be recognized under FEMA’s National Strategy for Youth Preparedness in San Marcos. It is the third recognized CERT program in Hays County, said Joseph McKenna, specialist at the Texas School Safety Center and director of the community Youth Preparedness Camp.
