Texas State celebrates 50 years of integration

In fall 1963, Dana Jean Smith, Georgia Hoodye, Gloria Odoms, Mabeleen Washington and Helen Jackson walked onto the Southwest Texas State campus and became the first African-Americans to attend, marking the beginning of what has now been 50 years of integration at the university.

The 2014-2015 Common Experience theme, “Exploring Democracy’s Promise: From Segregation to Integration,” aims to show the struggles of desegregation and the importance of integration. The theme raises the question of how people internalize change.

Bobcats defeat Prairie View A&M

The Texas State volleyball team improved to 7-0 all-time against the Prairie View A&M Panthers with a four-set victory.

The Bobcats outscored the Panthers by 16 points in four sets, with a 29.2 hitting percentage, the second-highest percentage this season.

Prairie View A&M won the second set, as Texas State rallied back from a 17-11 deficit to tie it at 24. Keeley Davis, sophomore outside hitter, and Brooke Smith, junior middle blocker, committed errors to give the Panthers their first set victory in 22 attempts.

Coach Karen Chisum pinpointed setting and errors as the culprits for the Panthers’ victory in the second set.
