The Texas State soccer team took an early lead Sunday and never looked back.

Kira Zapalac, sophomore midfielder, made her mark in the 12th minute by scoring on the first look at goal. Zapalac received the ball at the top of the 18-yard box and was able to turn and attempt a shot.

Stephen F. Austin surrendered an own goal to put the Bobcats up 2-0 late in the first half. Assistant Coach Link Scoggins said the own goal was a testament to the Bobcats’ pressure.

“Our presence and our determination took us to a ball and forced them into a mistake and they paid for it,” Scoggins said.

The mistake was too much to overcome for the Ladyjacks as Texas State went on to win 4-0 Sunday afternoon in Nacogdoches.

Scoggins said he was pleased with the way the offense responded to the Ladyjacks defense.

“What they were allowing us to do, was to get in behind their outside back,” Scoggins said. “And our girls knew the scout [report] very well and they just executed perfectly.”

Lauren Prater, junior forward, and Kassi Hormuth, sophomore forward, added a goal each in the second half. The goal for Prater is her fourth of the season.

“What our girls did wasn’t just relax after that, we had the message to stay organized in the back,” Scoggins said.

Scoggins said the team did a better job connecting than in previous games this season.

“They shifted well, they pressed well and they were able to transition out of it very well also,” Scoggins said.

Scoggins said there isn’t any negatives from a game like this but knows there are some things the team can improve.

“There are some details we could fine tune,” Scoggins said. “One of those would be to look to move the ball quicker. That way we don’t get caught in possession. And defensively when we do win it -- to make sure we keep it.”

Caitlynn Rinehart, senior goalkeeper, was able to post her third shutout of the season. The win moves the Bobcats overall record to 4-2 on the season.

The next matchup for the Bobcats is Sept. 18 against the New Mexico State Aggies.
