Even one man down, alt-J is sticking around

Making an incredible statement with their most recent album, the Grammy-nominated band alt-J have succeeded in finding their way to the top of the charts and to the top of my playlist. “This Is All Yours” is an original, diverse, intriguing roller coaster ride of an album. There are so many different types of sounds and instruments being molded together that it’s mind-blowing. Also, let’s not forget lead singer Joe Newman’s voice. It is no surprise that alt-J is up for a Grammy. They really brought alternative music to a whole new level.

The band was formed in 2007 and was originally a quartet. In 2011, they signed with Infectious Records and released their first EP, which they titled with a triangle symbol. This is where the recent band name, alt-J, is originated from. When you push the alt button and the J button simultaneously on an Apple Mac computer, it forms a triangle, or a delta symbol. This name was one of the first things that caught my attention about this band. The originality of it pokes at your curiosity, and then their distinct sound pulls you in.

alt-J released their first album in 2012, which was titled “An Awesome Wave.” In this album they included a few songs from their EP, one of them being Breezeblocks. In my opinion, this song was “the song” that made alt-J stand out from the crowd of alternative rock bands. It’s edgy, witty, smooth and very unique. The entire album dabbles in so many different instrumental backgrounds and vocals that no song is similar to the other. Their second album, “This Is All Yours,” is just as good as the first. Some might say it turned out even better, but others also believe that the band took a turn for the worse. After the great success that they saw with their first album, the band went all in and took a risk of changing up their sound and becoming even more creative than before. I don’t believe that this was a bad move on their part. It shows off the band’s ability to grow in their art and experiment with their talent. Unfortunately, right before this album was released alt-J lost a member of their band. They released this information to the world in January of 2014 via Twitter. Gwil Sainsbury was the bassist of the band and was one of the main founders of it as well. Although he forced alt-J to become a trio, the other band members clearly stated that they were all still best friends and that the band would go on.

This was a hard hit for alt-J fans everywhere, but it did not affect the success of their new album. “Left Hand Free” became a huge hit and went to the top of the charts immediately, which then shined some light on the rest of the album. Now “This Is All Yours” is nominated for a Grammy in the category for best alternative album alongside some other great artists such as Cage The Elephant and Jack White. alt-J have a big future ahead of them. Their music could be timeless, and their creativity is endless. I’m really looking forward to hearing more from this great band, and I will also be cheering for them to win that Grammy. Thanks for reading the first music blog of the semester. Until next time.
