MTV's Video Music Awards Fashion Do's and Don'ts

Fashion Blogger

MTV’s Video Music Awards aired last Sunday, August 24, 2014. Although the focus of the show is mainly on the artist and their music, fashion played a significant role as well.

Upon watching the award show, I saw many gorgeous and not-so-gorgeous red carpet fashions. I was inspired and disappointed all in a matter of about three hours.

Let’s start off with the women’s fashion.

Beyoncé, of course, looked fabulous. She played it safe by wearing a black long-sleeve, floor-length dress that looked absolutely stunning on her. It wasn’t just an ordinary black dress; the dress also had lace and was studded to give it a look that stood out. Black is always a great color to go with because it looks great on everyone.

Yonce also kept it simple when accessorizing by wearing a pair of black, dangly earrings that complimented the dress perfectly. Can we all wake up like that? Good job, Bey.

Katy Perry

Katy Perry was in attendance to the VMAs just like always, but this year she didn’t quite nail it when it came to her appearance. My love for Katy Perry and my love for denim took a turn for the worst when Katy decided to wear a strapless, floor-length denim dress. The dress had patches of different shades of denim all over and looked like something my grandma may have worn to her high school prom.

Katy was seen with rapper Riff Raff, who also had on a head-to-toe denim unit. Apparently the two were going for a Brittney Spears and Justin Timberlake look from the 2001 VMAs, but that was over a decade ago, and their outfits showed that. This was definitely a fashion fail.

Miley Cyrus

Despite the former surprises that Miley Cyrus has given us in her past VMA appearances, her fashion this year was quite impressive. Miley also decided to go with black this year, giving us a punk rock chic look. She wore a leather bandu-style top with high-waist leather pants. Miley is another great example of simplicity standing out.

We all remember Miley’s performance last year, so it’s only right that she was conservative this time around. Job well done, Miss. Cyrus.

Now that we’ve covered some of the women, let’s do the guys.

Snoop Dogg

Snoop Dogg has been in the game for a very long time now, and his style hasn’t changed much. Snoop gave us a gangster schoolboy-type look by wearing a black cardigan with baggy jeans. He accessorized with a pair of heart-shaped sunglasses and, of course, a silver chain with a marijuana leaf on it.

Snoop’s necklace gave me the impression that maybe he wasn’t quite in his right mind while getting dressed because his juvenile outfit was not at all VMA worthy.

Sam Smith

Not only does Sam Smith have a beautiful voice, but the British artist looked handsome and definitely red carpet-ready at the show. Sam wore a fitted black suit with a white dress shirt underneath. His sophisticated look was definitely formal and appropriate for the event.

As a new artist, Sam had to make an impressive appearance, and he did a great job doing so.

Celebrities have a big influence on most fashion trends. However, even celebrities can look not-so-fashionable at times. Although I may have not liked some of the VMA red carpet looks, everyone has their own idea of fashion, and that’s what’s so great about it.
