Owners of San Marcos restaurant linked to human trafficking

Federal authorities say the owners of San Marcos' Asian Garden Chinese Restaurant were a part of a massive ring that exploited undocumented workers, forcing them to work long hours for less than minimum wage, according to the Austin American-Statesman.

Wei Ji Zheng, 38, and Wen Juan Zhang, 34, both of San Marcos, were among 32 people arrested Thursday in Texas and Louisiana on federal conspiracy charges under the RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations) Act. They were also arrested on charges of conspiring to transport, harbor, encourage and induce undocumented workers to live in the United States, the Statesman reports.
